The story behind Boyfriend — how Kate Walsh bottled a feeling

Every fragrance brand claims an origin story. Most of them are invented after the fact, built by a marketing team trying to give a product some soul. Boyfriend's isn't one of those. It started the way most honest things do — with heartbreak.
A breakup and a scent that wouldn't leave
In 2009, our founder Kate Walsh went through a breakup with her real-life boyfriend. What she missed wasn't just him — it was the specific, hard-to-name combination of his fragrance mixed with hers, the scent that had settled into her clothes and her skin over the course of the relationship. In her own words: "I founded Boyfriend after a break up with my real life boyfriend. I missed his scent! But I particularly missed his fragrance on my skin, on my clothing and the memory of that magical combination of him and me."
That's a strange thing to build a company around. Most people just buy a candle and move on. Kate asked a bigger question instead: what if that feeling didn't have to depend on being in a relationship at all?
From HSN stage to Sephora shelves
Boyfriend launched in 2010 with a live premiere on HSN and some of you were there. One member of our Boyfriend Confidential Facebook community, Tia, watched that very first launch and begged her grandmother to buy it for her. "I still have that case, very worn and well loved," she told us. Another member, Lori, still has the train-style case as well from that era with all her "boyfriends" written on it.
Within months, the brand became a Sephora exclusive, and quickly became one of their top sellers. Community member Georgia remembers buying a rollerball there because she needed something to wear to an event and it became the only perfume she's ever bought a full size of since.
A quiet few years and a comeback nobody forgot
Growing too fast, too soon, comes with its own cost, and by 2014 the original run of the brand had wound down. But loyalty doesn't just disappear when a product does. Georgia told us she was "devastated" when it went away before she got the chance to buy another bottle and bought two the moment it came back. Our member Cindy put it simply: "I tried so many different scents while Boyfriend was away, but never found one I liked. I am so happy to have my Boyfriend back."
Boyfriend returned in 2018, direct-to-consumer this time, starting again with the Original scent before expanding into Morning W'oud and Down Under.
New fans, same feeling
Not everyone found Boyfriend through the HSN era — plenty of you found your way here through Kate herself, whether that's from her Instagram account or somewhere else entirely. Angelina discovered her as a student in Germany, couldn't afford the shipping and taxes at the time, and finally blind-bought the full lineup during a sale last year. Now Original and Morning W'oud are her everyday go-tos. And sometimes discovery is even more recent than that — one member told us her father, who she says has "never given a damn about much in life," smelled it on his doctor, asked what it was, and called his daughter to say he was buying it for her.
What "Boyfriend" actually means now
The name still confuses some people at first. It was never really about him — it was about the feeling he happened to leave behind, and the realization that the feeling was always available without needing a relationship to access it. That's what keeps people coming back across a decade, a shutdown, and a relaunch: not the name, but the feeling underneath it.
Find the one that feels like yours
Every Boyfriend scent traces back to that same original idea, just told a different way. The easiest way to find which version of that feeling is yours is the Boyfriend Sampler: pay shipping (or try all three) and get 15% off your first full-size bottle once you know which one you keep reaching for.
